User Avatars

A hundred .... and ten American dollars.

You can hold me to account and publicly mock me if they indeed introduce them without me paying up that amount of money.
This is a huge issue for moderators. Avatars should be moderated, and I think this is not possible on free-to-play site, built with help of enthusiasts. Because with time moderators will get tired of all that small pesky work.

I personally think the best possible solution is to allow to register photos of FIDE-titled players. Since they are going through some moderation to get distinct title on lichess.
just an idea : maybe let users themselves moderate other users avatars ?

I actually really appreciate the lack of avatars - the modern and elegant UI is one of the things I love most here. I currently have no other option than to work with my coach on Chess.com, and the site looks, for lack of a better expression, like the internet puked and never cleaned it up.
I totally agree with Tony. Probably about most things, but this in particular.
I wouldn't mind some elegant simple custom choices, like having that icon that shows up as either green or gray indicating online status have a few options (like a pawn, or a knight, or a cat), but I feel being able to upload your own images would just take away from the neatness this site evokes.
