Another thing: What is this talk about getting back points after losing to a cheater? Never happened to me. And what's the deal with players accusing you of being a bad player in the chat after THEY lost?! Zen mode next....
I've had points lost to a cheater refunded to me at least twice. It was people rated in the 1800 to 2000 range. The next day I got an Email from Lichess administration acknowledging that I lost to a cheater, and the points lost in the game in question had been added back to my rating.
I've also had a Casual game ended automatically in my favor by the cheat detection system. Probably the person opened an analysis engine in a 2nd tab. He was being a real jerk too, making comments about the poor quality of my play in a complex position, while making almost flawless moves himself.
But here is the funniest thing of all : Today I had this anonymous practice game ended in my favor in the opening
The thing is, I don't think the person was trying to "cheat" in the normally thought -of meaning ; we were playing a somewhat obscure line of the semi -slav, and he was probably referring to the Opening Explorer database to see what were the best lines in master play ----> Trying to learn, in other words. I multi -task that way myself sometimes --- There are only so many hours in the day, and if I get paired with a good player in anonymous games, sometimes I'll use the opportunity to brush up on my learning by referring to my opening or endgame files. So I kind of wish we could have continued the game -- I'm trying to learn that line better myself. Technically yes, it's cheating. You would not do it in a rated game. But I understand the mistake in an anonymous game.
One time it happened to me as well. I was so anxious to know if the ending I was looking at was considered drawable or not that I opened up another Lichess tab to find out, and the anonymous game was quickly ended in my opponent's favor by the detection system. And I thought, "Oh yeah, right, that was cheating", but it wasn't really a conscious idea.....I was anxious to know something about chess
FYI, I think cheaters exist at all rating levels. In a Casual game I was once paired with a player rated about 600 points below me. And I could not believe how well he was playing. It was like he had the subtle ideas of someone much more skilled, and could not make any mistakes. I was in dire straights, but somehow I managed to pull together my position and eke out a win. Ok, it happens that way sometimes. But then he launched into a rant and accused me of cheating, called me names and logged off. Was that just bitterness ? I reflected on it and figured maybe HE was getting assistance in some way, so maybe he thinks everyone else is just like him and does the same.

BTW, I sometimes start following new players that join Lichess and seem to be extremely gifted. I'll turn on the current games feature, and maybe once a month I see somebody join that starts out 5-0 , 7-1 or whatever, and immediately zooms up to a rating over 2200.
But it's not exactly infrequent that these players turn out to not be what they seem. Case in point. I logged into a game December 6th and saw a player move to 13 - 0 in Rapid play with a rating of 2472. I said " Wow ! , I've got to follow this and see what happens.....".
This player proceeded to go 17-0 in his first 24 hours on Lichess, playing nothing but 10 + 0 Rapid games, with a rating up to 2543. Ok, "We have a new Grandmaster join Lichess, maybe " ?
He then plays a 10 + 0 Against Stockfish LEVEL 8, playing the black pieces , and just destroyed it. Not a direct attack --- you don't do that with black. But he just ground it down relentlessly, with never even a hint of being in any kind of trouble himself. At that point, I was convinced that something was up. I have no way of knowing how grandmasters fare in 10 + 0 vs Stockfish Level 8. Maybe not ordinary 2500 + grandmasters, but do Super Grandmasters , rated over 2700 , beat it like that ?
In any case, the account was flagged the very same day for violating the rules of service in some fashion.
It's still open : lichess.org/@/PMOPMO/all
.......And apparently the player is simply never going to lose a game. Currently 28 -0 and still counting ........

The site is now requiring all cheaters to register!

Interesting read about online cheating. Concludes cheating is rampant.

"How many cheaters are there?"
About 5%
"Are they mostly in the 2000+ category?"
They start lower, but they rise fast.

I hope they're in the 2000+ cat, imagine cheating and still having sub 2k rating.
Wouldn't “shadow banning” be a good and amusing measure? Letting cheaters play against other cheaters only.
