How to beat highly defensive players?

@gentjanlici
I also suggest you to study opening theory. You will learn to create maximum number of threats right from the opening.
Thanks for your advices, but I play for fun I don't write the moves anywhere. While for opening theory I know more ideas than him because I have been forced to try new openings all the time to avoid drawish and boring positions he creates. Opening threats give me an advantage only the first five games I try it then he finds good responses so I can't rely on opening traps with someone I play everyday.
Keep playing the best move and slowly improve your position. If someone is constantly trading off all their pieces they are likely to be not playing the best move.
